D-Day Letters

These are a series of three letters my granddad, Corporal Ronald Porter of 6616 Servicing Echelon, Royal Air Force, sent in May 1945 just under a year after D-Day. Although 11 months on from the Normandy landings themselves, due to censorship regulations this is the first time he was able to tell his family and loved ones of his travels over the previous 10 months. From August 1944, just a month after D-Day until May 1945, shortly after victory in Europe was declared it tells the story of an airman’s journey across Europe.
